Last Orders (BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Winners 2007)
We are delighted to have Last Orders with us this year. Kevin Lees was with us back in 2005 playing in a duo with James Boyle, a Bideford Fiddler.
Last Orders are a very talented group of musicians, who have taken he festival circuit by storm, with their lively performance..
Joe O'Connor (melodeon), Matthew Jones (guitar), Kevin Lees (fiddle) and David Jones (fiddle) met when they were all members of Folkestra, a 17-piece band run by Kathryn Tickell at the Sage Gateshead. After putting together a set of tunes to record on a Folkestra CD, they realised that they loved playing together and decided to enter the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and they won. In July 2007 they issued their first album "Last Orders" on the Fellside label FECD207.
Currently they are all studying at University so fitting in performance dates is not the simplest of tasks however expect a fun and dazzling performance from these fine young musicians.
‘Last Orders have a maturity of style that belies their youth - a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts and best of all a joy in sharing their music with others.'
John Tams
"Last Orders are fine instrumentalists, technically on top of their game but they are fine musicians too and the intonation in their playing is a joy to hear. Pace, yes, but also light and shade. They reveal artistic and emotional depths in their playing. I recommend anyone who enjoys folk music, to go along and listen to them." Roy Bailey
”an exceptionally experienced mature and accomplished band" Songlinks December 2007
"brimming with exuberant youthfulness and energetic playing". Tim Readman, Penguin Eggs Canada.
